Tommy Wilkinson is a health economist and clinical pharmacist and is currently the health economics lead for iDSI in sub-Saharan Africa, based within PRICELESS SA at the University of Witwatersrand School of Public Health, Johannesburg. Under iDSI Tommy leads on a series of research and technical assistance projects aimed at strengthening priority setting and health technology assessment (HTA) in South Africa and in sub-Saharan Africa.
Tommy was previously a Health Economist at the UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) working in clinical guideline development and in the international advisory team (NICE International) where he led on technical assistance projects in low and middle income countries, including HTA capacity development and economic evaluation methodology research. Prior to NICE, he was a Therapeutic Group Manager at New Zealand’s Pharmaceutical Management Agency (Pharmac) and as a clinical pharmacist he has worked in various hospitals in the UK’s National Health Service, primary care medicines management and pharmaceutical services commissioning.
